Interview with Magnetico guitarist Rafael Moreira

Magnetico is the latest project from guitar virtuoso, Rafael Moreira. The band's newest release, Songs About The World is a very solid, straight forward rock album that is accentuated by the incredible shredding of Moreira, which to me seems to be the focal point of this disc. He shreds through tune after tune leaving the listener spent and in awe. The man is talented and it is truly amazing what he can make his guitar do. As an amateur guitarist (a self-proclaimed hack) and someone who has been in and around the music business for the past 18 years I was thoroughly impressed. This is a great disc from an incredible musician. Here is what Moreira had to say about the band, the new release and what we can expect from Magnetico in the near future.

Now that your new CD, Songs About The World, is complete how do you feel about it? Are you satisfied with the outcome?
Rafael: I'm really happy with the album, particularly considering there was no budget or label support; I think it came out amazing. I feel that Joey, Corey and I played really well together and we got to create our own sound and I'm very proud of everyone involved on this project for their hard work!

What can fans expect when they pick up a copy of Songs About The World?
Rafael: Definitely some exciting music – it'll take you places! You may not be able to take it all in in just one listen; you’ll probably find something new in each song each time you play it!

Even though the songs on Songs About The World are packed to the gills with huge guitars, intricate rhythms, and complex arrangements, there are still strong songs at the core of it all. When you write do you start building from a simpler frame and then just stack up all of the individual parts and nuances?
Rafael: I usually write the songs on my own and then we start to play the song/idea with the band. You gotta have a great group of guys that want to create incredible music together! It's like being scientists in a room developing new things, but with music... I love it!

Are there any tracks on this disc that are personal favorites or that have good stories behind them?
Rafael: I pretty much like all the songs on the album... but, even though I really like the music on "Avalanche" the lyrics are even cooler since it's a double entendre. We didn't think about it that much when we wrote it, but usually people think it's about a relationship between a man and woman, but in reality it's about the love and hate relationship between a man and cocaine. "Letter For A Friend" also has an interesting story behind it. After I wrote the song I called a friend of mine (singer/songwriter Courage). He and I used to be in a band together and I asked him if he could write lyrics for it. He asked me "what do you want people to feel when they hear the song?" I told him I wanted people to cry... I swear I’ve witnessed a few already.

How quick are you in the studio? Can you usually knock things out in a couple takes?
Rafael: It all depends on the purpose of it all. Some people think my first takes are the best ones, but when I'm producing my own music... forget it! I get very picky with the whole thing, it's no fun sometimes! But I think when I’m producing other people I get to see things differently. I can't wait for somebody else to produce my music... but I have to have a lot of respect for them musically, otherwise it'd never work.

What about your personal influences, which guitarists were you listening to early on?
Rafael: Oh man, people like Ace Frehley, Jimmy Page, Ritchie Blackmore, Angus Young... all the good guys!

What are some of the qualities of a good metal guitarist?
Rafael: In general I dig all around guitar players that have soul... no soul, no go! They need to have a good vibrato, good bends, and they need to be able to improvise... you gotta be loose and able jam out! Basically I'm not a fan of robot guitar playing... lol!

Overall, what guitarist have you been the most inspired by?
Rafael: I mentioned a few early on, but there are some really amazing people that I'm inspired by and one of them is Scott Henderson. He used to be my teacher when I went to school and I learned a lot from him, not so much by his vocabulary, but by the way he thinks as far as improvisation goes.

The list of musicians that you have played with is quite impressive. Is there anyone individual or any one band that you have not played with that you would like to play with?
Rafael: I always wanted to play with Ozzy and I think he's going to miss out.

You have had an unbelievable career as a guitarist. Can you offer any advice to any of the younger guitarists who may be reading this out there and are trying to etch out a career in the music business?
Rafael: The name of the game (in my opinion) has changed – it's called "crossover"! If you wanna work and collaborate with different people you have to be versatile! Some people might see me that way I think. I've worked with Paul Stanley (KISS), Don Felder (The Eagles), been on a Rock TV show on CBS called Rock Star with INXS and Supernova (members of Metallica, GNR and Motley Crue), released a CD with my own rock band Magnetico, released a solo CD of my own fusion project called "Acid Guitar”, have an acoustic project in the works as well, but I also work Christina Aguilera, Natasha Bedingfield, Pink, etc. I basically love music and enjoy doing it to the fullest and that's my advice to all of you trying to get some gigs – "be versatile!

What has been the most memorable moment of your career so far?
Rafael: Obviously having played with Paul Stanley from KISS was like a dream come true for me, for a number of reasons. I started playing guitar because of KISS, and Paul Stanley used to watch the Rock Star TV Show; he personally asked all of us in the House Band if we would go on tour with him! The Live DVD One Live Kiss is basically a partial documentary of that.

Any closing words?
Rafael: Do it because you love it!

Numa altura em que a Europa dá sinais de desagregação, segundo alguns famosos criadores da União, como Delors ou Helmut Khol que contribuíram com os seus esforços e delicada actuação política, para uma situação estável e de unidade fortalecida, a Madeira está possuída por um populismo de resultados dramáticos. E com professores a debitar!
Os representantes do povo, particularmente os palavrosos líderes dos partidos da oposição não conhecem o verdadeiro retrato da Madeira. Quem éramos e quem somos? Como chegámos aqui em trinta e cinco anos de regime de semi-autonomia? Porque chegámos a esta grave situação de empobrecimento. Conheço gente que morrerá afogada no seu ódio!
Distraem o povo com parvoíces inqualificáveis. Para quê tanto esforço para denegrir, se o importante é construir. Para quê esconder que em 1978 éramos das Regiões mais pobres de Portugal e da Europa, e hoje estamos com níveis iguais ou melhores que a esmagadora maioria das Regiões do País e de alguma Europa.
Gastámos acima das nossas possibilidades? É verdade! Fomos todos. Não foram só os governantes. Mas já fizeram as comparações entre a Região e o Continente? A Madeira possuía em 1978, 5 estabelecimentos de ensino na Educação Pré-Escolar. Hoje possui quase 200. Os alunos matriculados nessa altura eram 505, hoje ultrapassam os 8 mil. Dez professores asseguravam esse ensino. Hoje são mais de 1200.
Na habitação em 1978, 148 famílias eram beneficiárias de intervenção do Governo. Hoje são à volta de 15.000. Existiam na Região cerca de 65.000 alojamentos familiares clássicos. Hoje são mais de 130 mil. Existiam 90 estabelecimentos hoteleiros em 1978. Hoje ultrapassam os 200. Não existia nenhum estabelecimento de Turismo de Espaço Rural, hoje são para cima de 50. A capacidade de alojamento hoteleiro rondava as 11.400 camas. Hoje cifra-se nas 30 mil.
As receitas na hotelaria (1978) eram de 7.524.000 euros. Hoje ultrapassam os 230.000.000 euros. Tudo graças a um trabalho conjunto entre parceiros públicos e privados, que beneficiaram de obras públicas fantásticas, como foram as acessibilidades internas e externas. Quando nos deram carta de alforria mitigadíssima, nesse ano distante de 1976, houve que elaborar projectos desenhar planos, preparar obras.
Aterravam em 1978 no desgraçadinho Aeroporto da Madeira coberto a folha de alumínio quase 6.000 aviões/ano. Hoje num Aeroporto que foi pago só pelos madeirenses com recursos a empréstimos da banca, o único em Portugal, o que significa que todos os outros foram comparticipados por fundos europeus (como o nosso) e pagos com dinheiro do Governo da República, situação que nos foi recusada e que ainda nos custa os olhos da cara em juros e taxas. Com a privatização algo vai mudar. Hoje aterram no Aeroporto do Funchal entre 13 e 14 mil aviões por ano. Se em 1978 os passageiros embarcados + desembarcados rondavam os 660 mil, hoje ultrapassam os 2 milhões e meio. No Porto do Funchal tínhamos em 1978, 120 mil passageiros embarcados + desembarcados. Hoje passámos a fasquia dos 700 mil.
É preciso ir à História, consultar as estatísticas do INE para constatar a evolução desta terra em todos os domínios. Não cabe neste curto artigo de opinião citar todos os itens. Mas importa realçar que a taxa de mortalidade há trinta e cinco anos, estava nos 35,9% por mil, e hoje, cifra-se nos 3 por mil. E vale a pena saber o que era feito e o que se faz em ajuda domiciliária incluindo apoio de refeições, refeitórios e Centros de Acolhimento e de abrigo, alojamento temporário, residências de autonomização, lares para crianças e jovens, centros comunitários e de actividades de tempos livres, Casas do Povo, Refeitórios e cantinas sociais.
Peço desculpa aos fanáticos, mas o PS da Madeira parece um bar de relambório onde actuam à vez, doutores e operários da palavra, gente que se alapou a tachos e penachos, em vez de estudar, de investigar e de trabalhar com objectivos bem definidos. Isto de andar a socratizar a política de um partidinho que já foi uma escola de bons políticos, é realmente uma sensaboria. É triste não existir ninguém capaz de ser oposição serena e coerente na Região. Somos todos nós que estamos a perder.
Bem sei que o populismo dava votos. Ainda é assim? Lamentemos a situação porque significa que evoluímos em muitas áreas, menos na cultural. As críticas ásperas invariavelmente dirigidas a Alberto João Jardim, não trazem nada de novo ao debate político, porque não trazem clarificação. As pessoas são convergentes como divergentes. Só que ainda não perceberam que por mais que carreguem no acelerador da saída de Alberto João Jardim do poder, estão a apressar a própria sepultura.
Ele não é a Madeira. É da Madeira. Foi eleito por maiorias sucessivas. Está legitimado. Defende com unhas e dentes os interesses da Madeira, seja onde for, contra quem for. E dentro do partido dele nem todas as vozes são convergentes. Foi assim desde os tempos de Virgílio Pereira. Não vale a pena estarem a criar novos personagens, como se fossem únicos, porque isso além de ser uma aberração política, é um insulto para tantos políticos do PSD que trabalham com ou sem cooperação com o Presidente do partido e do Governo. Estar permanentemente nas queixas sem olhar para a sociedade, é partir de premissas erradas.
Por isso é que os de lá sabem dividir para reinar. E os de cá, julgando-se mais espertos, são uns tolos sem emenda. E beneficiaram!

Era cuestión de fechas, de elegir un día en el calendario para anunciar lo que ya muchos imaginábamos. La noticia de la muerte de Hugo Chávez se ha producido en la tarde del pasado martes, pero desde hacía meses era predecible su pronto final. Los medios oficiales cubanos habían mantenido la versión de su lenta pero ascendente recuperación, para deslizar sólo en las últimas semanas los detalles de algunas complicaciones. Como un guión bien cuidado fue manejado el asunto, como un guión escrito en la Plaza de la Revolución de La Habana, por dos hermanos a los que el fallecimiento de su discípulo de Miraflores, los ha dejado en una situación muy delicada.
Sin embargo, no han podido demorar más el obituario, pues la información es tan difícil de guardar por estos días, como el agua en el cuenco formado por dos manos. Así que finalmente han encontrado un día para contarle al mundo el secreto mejor guardado de Cuba, sólo comparable en hermetismo con la propia enfermedad de Fidel Castro. Ahora vendrá el duelo, los crespones negros, los panegíricos sobre el difunto, pero también comenzarán a ventilarse las incongruencias entre los partes médicos que se publicaron y el fatal desenlace que ha tenido la situación clínica del Comandante. Las mentiras quedarán más en evidencia, las exageraciones se percibirán más burdas y la verdad le pasará factura a los líderes del chavismo dentro de Venezuela. También a los ancianos dirigentes cubanos les tocará su cuota de responsabilidad por la falta de transparencia con que manejaron la convalecencia de un presidente extranjero tratado en nuestro territorio nacional. Los ciudadanos venezolanos tienen derecho a exigir una explicación de cómo y cuándo fue realmente el deceso de su líder, habrá que ver si Raúl Castro está dispuesto a darla.
